The greatest joke of HBO’s “Succession” was the inability of aging fictional CEO Logan Roy to name his replacement. Talk about the ultimate failure! But there are egomaniacal men who will go to their graves before envisioning a world that exists without them. That’s the animating through line in the three-part HBO documentary “Ren Faire” (which premiered last week and concludes Sunday) about the tenuous future of the Texas Renaissance Festival.

A real-life, downmarket version of “Succession,” it offers a claustrophobic portrait of the festival’s eccentric and off-putting founder George Coulam and the three subordinates — two men and a woman, tidily echoing “Succession’s” Kendall, Roman and Shiv — whose sweaty hopes and dreams of Ren faire domination are dependent on Coulam’s mercurial moods. Who will wrest control from the old man, if anyone?

Kim, Cronenworth and Higashioka homer to back Waldron in the Padres' 13-1 win against Arizona

  • By BERNIE WILSON - AP Sports Writer

Knuckleballer Matt Waldron combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, and Ha-Seong-Kim and Jake Cronenworth each hit a three-run homer for the San Diego Padres in a 13-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kyle Higashioka hit a solo homer. David Peralta, who spent his first 8 1/2 seasons with the Diamondbacks, reached base five straight times and had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice. Cronenworth also had an RBI single to tie his season high. The Diamondbacks turned to outfielder Pavin Smith to pitch the eighth.

Teoscar Hernández powers Dodgers to 11-3 win over Yankees

  • By MIKE FITZPATRICK - AP Baseball Writer

Teoscar Hernández homered twice and drove in six runs, including a grand slam that helped power the Los Angeles Dodgers past the New York Yankees 11-3 for their second consecutive victory in this marquee matchup. Kiké Hernández also went deep and Shohei Ohtani had an RBI single to back rookie Gavin Stone, who has won three straight starts and five of his last six. After handing New York just its third series loss of the season, the Dodgers will go for a three-game sweep Sunday night. Aaron Judge hit two homers for the Yankees, giving him a major league-high 23, but they’ve managed only three runs in 23 innings at the plate since slugger Juan Soto exited Thursday night’s win over Minnesota with a forearm injury.

A bit of history for the Panthers, who lead a Stanley Cup Final for the first time

  • By TIM REYNOLDS - AP Sports Writer

This one surely felt different to the Florida Panthers, for a lot of reasons. They led after one period of a Stanley Cup Final game for the first time since 1996. They led after two periods for the first time in a title-round game. They led a Cup final game by more than one goal for the first time – ever. Most importantly, for the first time, they walked out of an arena leading a title series. Sergei Bobrovsky was at a superstar level in net, Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues scored and the Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Saturday night in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Liam Fraser's first career goal earns FC Dallas 1-1 draw with Minnesota United

  • AP

Liam Fraser scored his first career goal to help FC Dallas earn a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United. Hassani Dotson took a pass from Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 9th minute and scored his second goal of the season to give Minnesota United (8-3-5) a 1-0 lead. It was the second assist this season for Hlongwane. Dallas (3-8-5) answered with the equalizer in the 15th minute with Fraser’s goal. Fraser used assists from Asier Illarramendi and Jesús Ferreira to find the net for the first time in 49 starts and 77 appearances since the start of the 2018 season.

Bobrovsky makes 33 saves as the Panthers shut out the Oilers 3-0 in Game 1 of Stanley Cup Final

  • By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer

Sergei Bobrovsky backstopped the Florida Panthers to a 3-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. The goalie everyone simply calls “Bob” made 33 saves for his second shutout of this postseason and third in the playoffs in his stellar 14-year NHL career. Bobrovsky is the biggest reason Florida has a lead of any kind in the final for the first time in franchise history. Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues supplied the offense by scoring on two of the Panthers' first five shots. Reigning MVP Connor McDavid and the Oilers dominated at times but could not crack Bobrovsky.

St. Louis City's Bürki, Portland Timbers' Pantemis stellar in scoreless draw

  • AP

Roman Bürki stopped three shots in goal for St. Louis City and James Pantemis had two saves for the Portland Timbers as the two clubs played to a scoreless draw. It was the fourth clean sheet of the season for Bürki and the league-leading ninth draw of the season for St. Louis City (3-4-9), which won the Western Conference in its inaugural campaign last year. Pantemis made his fourth start and fifth appearance, subbing in for usual starter Maxime Crépeau, who missed with international duties. The Timbers (5-7-6) stretched their unbeaten run to four behind Pantemis’ second shutout of the season.

Shane van Gisbergen races to 2nd straight NASCAR Xfinity victory, winning from the pole at Sonoma

  • By JENNA FRYER - AP Auto Racing Writer

Shane van Gisbergen raced to his second straight Xfinity Series victory, winning from the pole Saturday at Sonoma Raceway to further build his reputation as one of the best road racers in NASCAR. The former rugby player then autographed a rugby ball and kicked it into the grandstands — same as last week in Oregon — following a crowd-pleasing burnout. In his first full season of NASCAR competition, the New Zealander is running a mixed schedule with several teams in a development program for Trackhouse Racing. The star from Australian V8 Supercars won the Cup race last year on the Chicago street course in his NASCAR debut. He raced to his his first career Xfinity Series victory last week on the road course at Portland.

Cargo ship hit by missile in Gulf of Aden in suspected attack by Yemen Houthi rebels. No one hurt

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

A suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels has targeted an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, with a missile hitting the vessel. The missile struck the ship’s forward station, starting a fire that those on board later put out. That's according to the private security firm Ambrey. The firm says that a second missile fired at the ship missed and that people “on board small boats in the vicinity opened fire on the ship during the incident.” Suspicion for the attack immediately fell on the Houthis. The rebels did not immediately claim the assault Sunday, though it can sometimes take hours or even days for them to acknowledge their attacks.
