Hey everyone.

I don't post here that much. I don't own any forward look vehicles, although they have always interested me, especially the 58 Plymouth. If I knew how to do work myself, I would get one and restore it. Anyways, what was the exact color of Christine? What was the paint code they used when they made that movie? I would like to eventually get my car painted a really bright red and would like to maybe paint it the same color Christine was. If anybody knows this paint code, I would really appreciate it. Does MACCO have this color? They seem to have the most reasonable prices.

thanks

The real 58 colors were Toreador red (DQE-70773-DAL) and Iceburg white top (DQE-8131-DAL)

http://www.mopar1.us/chip/1958-plymouth-pc.jpg

For the movie they used a GM Spectra red, which was used on Camaro's. Code 75

The correct red is Hot Hues Scarlet Fever.

Don't listen to any of these "experts". No one on Forward Look Network was in the movie. Just a bunch of guesses and hear say.

I was in the audience for the movie.....

Hollywood usually makes a special blend of Colors (in this case a red) that would show up well on their cameras. So doubtful, but possible, that it was an original shade.

They had to repaint so many cars for use in this movie that had different under-layment, paint that would show up differently, and a lot of the scenes that were shot at night were a challenge to do the color justice. IMHO

I believe we have one or two forum members who have some of the actual Hollywood Christine cars that may have been used in the movie in some aspect, so I will defer to them.

PS On the Nash Bridges TV Convertible 71 Cuda's they did a special yellow that was different the original shade due to this color camera shade pickup.

If you saw the movie "Cat's Eye" made in about 1986, the Christine car in that one was Toreador Red and Iceberg white.

The rumors have always been that the stunt cars were painted in Camaro red. In reality, any red will do.

The real question is why would you use Maaco? Unless this will be a daily driver, you won't get a good paint job. The quality of the paint is poor, and it will not stay in good condition for long. Plus, they are a quickie repair shop. They won't car about your antique. Take it to a local shop with a good reputation. Better still, buy yourself a DeVilbiss paint gun (under $200) and teach yourself. I have painted four cars in my garage, and they all look very good. I promise that you will put more time and care into your own paint job than Maaco will.

Glad you asked this question "cooldude"...Actually, the CCC (ChristineCarClub) has the two REAL movie cars and the color was matched based on those cars colors, but was kept tight lipped...
My own "Christine" was painted '83 GM CORVETTE RED...(Yes, I know your wondering how the he!l they have a color for the '83 Vette, when there wasn't one ever made). Well, I asked and got the typical "Cause any red that is this bright HAS to be Corvette red"...Contrary to popular belief, Not just any red will do..There were TWO different colors that appeared in the movie if you watch it...When "Christine" was "Pissed" she was that Bright red, but when she was relaxed, she was more of a deeper red...Either of these would be correct for the Type "Christine" color you are looking for....

While Maaco has gotten a bad rep for their "Sh*t" paint jobs, if You pay Maaco, I've seen some Really nice paint jobs come from them...IF you ever want to know more about The movie, Car, The Stars of the movie, or the book, You know where to find US...

I worked for maaco when I was a teen, you get what you pay for with them. Pay $1000 and the paint will not last a year.

A member here knows the TRUE Colour used as he recently undertook the Body rebuild on One of the 2 Remaining Genuine Movie Cars. He worked real hard with a Paint Company to have the Paint Coded. So if you want the absolute Correct colours then Private Message Member " Ply474 " .. Or contact him through his Business "Classic Car Creations" in Florida. You will be amazed at what he done to the "Movie Christine Car" , Or possibly contact the Owner of the Movie Car " Bill Gibson" ..

Wow, everybody's an expert....
Since your so up to date on these matters, you must surely know that just because no Car is manufactured, doesn't mean the paint code doesn't exist.
"81 Flame red" or whatever might be a close second however, until someone can show me PROOF from one of the actual person's that painted the cars, show me a supplier's paint code number FROM THE ACTUAL STUDIO, etc. ALL are simply Guesses at this point. Sure, some are closer guesses than others, but ALL ARE GUESSES....No one knows the Actual color and can PROVE it.

Awesome car in that color I agree but too many red 57/58 Ply's,like grey Elenore stangs etc, there are some other colors that look awesome on those FL cars, just my two cents, all due respect :O)

I agree that buying a gun and teaching youself is not hard. I attended Vo-Tech while in HS and love painting etc.
One can do an awesome job at home in a simple garage, just remember that the body and prep work is key, plus wet sanging and buffing it out after the paint is cured makes it look soooooo slick.

Being clean is beyond important,be anal about wiping and tacking it down before spraying and preping your garage, you'll be glad you did! Don't give up,these cars become huge when block sanding every inch,my 59 Imperial became bigger than the Titanic, thought I'd never finish it,just remember DETAIL DETAIL DETAIL.

Tis funny how the "Spectra Red" has a listing under the 1983 Model year for "Cor" Meaning CORVETTE...Code number "B8296"
"B8115" looks to be brighter though for 1983 Color codes.
Seeing as how the movie "Christine" didn't come out until 1983, Filmed in 1982.. "Flame Red" was a 1984 Color...I doubt the movie producers could have gotten this color a full year before it was available...

I did a Plymouth once in "Swift Red" and "Antique White," both stock, universal Sherman Williams colors. I deliberately made it simple stock colors. The red is darker than the movie car, but I thought it was nicer than a tomato shade, or vermillion. More like Toreador. I think that part of the problem here is that when you make a movie, the cinematographer "color times" each shot a certain way. This isn't something that can be accounted for by guessing a paint color based on a midnight showing of Christine on TNT. Also, movie stock shifts colors over time. Some film stock has different color qualities to it. Think Techicolor vs. FujiColor. Also, on the production end, lighting tricks are used. Sometimes things like shadows are actually painted onto things, colored light filters are used to change the tone of the scene... And then paint itself can change color a little bit over time. If you want to know what color the real Christine is, you would need one of the lucky guys who has one to show you or tell you the code.

Did you know Swift Red was the "real" color or not?

That actually was the color used in the movie. Cheap ass Swift Red. Also known as JAP Red.

Hot Hues Scarlet Fever is almost the same color.

Swift red is pretty dark. Like blood. I think Christine was lighter...But, alas, I don't care what color Christine was or if my choice in paint was cheap. Just saying it's all subjective.

Again, I ask any and all to prove what color "Christine" actually was. I mean, I want to see and hear from the original guy/guys that painted the cars. I want to see the illusive "55 Gal drums" of red paint...
I want to see a reciept from "Baker Auto" where "Arnie" Bought the paint. Can anybody prove this? A member here knows the TRUE Colour used as he recently undertook the Body rebuild on One of the 2 Remaining Genuine Movie Cars. He worked real hard with a Paint Company to have the Paint Coded. So if you want the absolute Correct colours then Private Message Member " Ply474 " .. Or contact him through his Business "Classic Car Creations" in Florida. You will be amazed at what he done to the "Movie Christine Car" , Or possibly contact the Owner of the Movie Car " Bill Gibson" ..

.

BUMP.. In case anyone missed this post..

As mentioned above, Member " Ply474 " has had the Paint Code CODED by a Company, they worked with the GENUINE MOVIE CAR and coded the Paint,, That is about as close as you will get to the guy who supplied or painted the Cars for the movie back then. Ply474 knows the Original Colour as well as Bill the Owner of One of the 2 remaining Genuine Movie Cars, so no need for anyone guessing, Contact one of those guys..

The Car from California was painted WA7211, 83 Spectra Red in 2009. The car from Florida was painted and partially restored(painted) by the Garvie Family, then sold to new Owner and restored again.(was not original movie color) Therefore neither car had the original Paint when tested. There is the assembly line car in the UK a private collector own's and another REAL Christine in Santa Maria, California("RAM CAR") that the owner refuse's to share with the Movie Fan's although I have his info.

As Chaney said, it is all a guess now. NO ONE know's what the real code that was used. Personally I had the original "Show Me Scene" Dash Board Paint photographed by Kemperle Auto Paint Inc(huge Paint supply Co) and the result's were WA7211. I think the Color is too dark however I actually had the original paint still on the Dash.

One can argue who does and doesn't know forever.
57/58's look great in lots of colors but the discussion is what is the correct movie color (struggling not to type colour!).

My understanding is that there were 13 cars in the "Detroit 1957" scene, one red with white roof glamor (aka glamour) car with full trim which did the decklid on fingers and the cigarette ash scene and 12 others in white in various internal states based on the plans for them in filming painted white on the outside. I understand the 12 then were quickly painted red (roof left white) en masse in the same red which was a fleet color (aka colour) which I understand is NOT WA7211. I understand other prop car pieces were also job-lot sprayed.

The red applied over white is the color Ply474 restored the Camaro Killer car to after research work including matching to paint from the spray-over that had been applied directly to the white on the actual car rather than referencing the subsequent 2 post-filming renovations before the 2011/2012 restoration. The recent restoration again applied paint over a car initially sprayed white as seen on FB links (above in earlier post #355275).

The above would suggest the Camaro Killer car is the correct shade for it's movie-spec and has been restored with respect to the way it was built which is what I think this thread is supposed to be about (with the idea that FL is about the cars, in this case the shade of red a group of famous FL cars were painted, and not the esoterica of the movie script...apologies to John C in advance).
