A small one-room apartment is the usual “first” home for a young family or a bachelor. The area here is small and can accommodate a living room, a kitchen, a combined bathroom, and sometimes even a hallway. But even such a cramped apartment can turn into a comfortable modern housing option.

Circ*mstance

At the planning stage, you need to determine exactly how many items should be in the room. A one-room apartment of 20 square meters should be as functional as possible, and only then cozy and decorative. Grandma’s free chest of drawers, no matter how beautiful it is, will not do.

Furniture is selected according to the following principles.

1. Utilitarianism and transparency – a minimum of details in structures such as a table or shelving, a maximum of glass in cabinets, tables, and shelves.

2. A minimum of items – a man’s bedroom can include a folding sofa instead of a bed, and the living room can consist of the same sofa with a coffee table. But the working part – shelving, a computer desk, cabinets with peripherals – can take up more space.

3. Transformers – the more functions one item performs, the better. Folding countertops, built-in wardrobes with pull-out systems, cabinets and chairs with drawers for linen allow you to free up living space.

4. A stylish option is ceiling mezzanines and shelves. But open niches with clothes are not suitable: they give the impression of clutter.

5. Preferably built-in cabinets, from floor to ceiling – they create one whole with the wall.

If there is a children’s room, you need to arrange a space for play, saving on sleeping space. Two-level loft beds, folding options, folding sofas – any transformer options are suitable. Such furniture can be hidden during the day and free up space. An excellent option is pull-out beds under the podium.

Types of zoning/redevelopment

A typical apartment – Khrushchev, Stalin, Brezhnevka, includes interior partitions. Sometimes these are major load-bearing walls and in such cases, redevelopment of the home is impossible. But more often these are really excessively thick unloaded structures. In such cases, redevelopment is a mandatory element of repair.

There are many options for arranging one-room apartments.

1. Studio – a beautiful and fashionable option even on 30 square meters. Such a space is zoned by grouping furniture: a sofa and armchairs – a living room, a bed and a floor lamp – a bedroom, a built-in wardrobe, a sink and a folding tabletop – a kitchen. The studio requires high ceilings and large windows, so such a project cannot be implemented in a Khrushchev-era building. If there is a child in the family, it is impossible to organize a studio in the full sense of the word.

2. Curtains and screensCurtains and screens are translucent. This provides good lighting and a visual feeling of spaciousness. A curtain separates the bedroom from the living room, the kitchen niche from the children’s room.

3. Plasterboard partitions – both continuous and through, that is, including niches, shelves, arched passages. They are thinner than walls, take up less space, and create the same comfort.

4. Zoning with color and texture – the distinction can only be guessed thanks to the different color design of the zones. The range should be general, but the shades are grouped by zones. The same can be done using textures to create a monochrome design as in the photo.

5. Interior elements – a podium on the floor will easily separate the bedroom from the living room or the children’s room from the dining room. Volumetric figures on the ceiling do the same thing, although not as clearly. The effect enhances the lighting.

A universal way of zoning is furniture. Shelves located perpendicular to the wall are used as partitions. The design is translucent and does not reduce the perspective. Disadvantage: you cannot fill the rack with small, varied items.

Style

The design of a one-room apartment involves decoration in minimalist styles.

Minimalism in any of its manifestations limits the number of objects and shades. This is an ideal solution for small spaces of 20 meters.

Use of color

To visually transform small homes into spacious ones, designers offer many interesting ideas. Color is a great assistant in organizing the interior.

1. Monochrome – white and all its shades. The best way to visually enlarge a space. However, this is not a budget option: light-colored furniture and white trim quickly get dirty. White goes well with brick walls.

2. Two-tone design – in fact, it includes 2 selected shades, and the default is black and white. One of the main colors is basic. The second is contrasting either in intensity or color. It creates color accents. In a small apartment they are necessary both for zoning and for structuring the space.

3. Three-color range – includes another rich color. Required if there is a children’s room in a one-room apartment. In this case, the colors should be bright: red, yellow, green.

A pastel or neutral tone is used as a base: beige, gray, peach.

Walls

In small rooms, walls serve as a structuring element along with furniture. A flat surface visually seems closer, that is, it reduces the space. It needs to be divided.

1. A niche – if there is one, you cannot cover it with curtains. Niches, as well as projections and partitions, structure the space.
2. Colored fragments – part of the wall covered with bright wallpaper or lined with patterned tiles. The element visually raises the ceiling and separates the zones.
3. Invoice – the same effect is created by a fragment of mosaic or Venetian plaster, or even a picture.

Lighting

The design project of a one-room apartment must include lighting. A large chandelier in the center of the ceiling is not a suitable option.

Lighting in a one-room apartment is closely related to zoning. The zone is highlighted by one, relatively large lighting fixture and a number of spotlights. They can be placed not only on the ceiling, but also on the walls, and sometimes even on furniture. In the latter case, it is rather the backlight.

You need to experiment with color carefully. Colored lighting is only appropriate locally and acts as a designer partition between zones.

Kitchen

Many people would like to have a spacious kitchen. This is not always possible. But you can make the kitchen complex comfortable and convenient.

In studios, it is worth considering combining the kitchen with the hallway. There’s no room for a closet specifically for street clothes anyway. It’s easier to place a worktop with shelves, an electric stove instead of a gas stove, and a refrigerator.

In a kitchen area separated by a partition or screen, the layout may include wall cabinets, shelves, pencil cases, and narrow pull-out cabinets. It is recommended to embed the equipment: this way it takes up less space.

You should not combine the kitchen with the dining room if you can take the food into the living room. If not, then you should install a folding tabletop or combine the dining area with a window sill.

Another interesting option is to install a sink in front of the window sill and include this space in the kitchen unit.

Bathroom

In Khrushchev-era buildings, the bathrooms are usually combined. In Brezhnevkas this small room is often divided into a bath and toilet. It is better to remove the partition and combine them.

Mandatory elements of a combined bathroom include a toilet, sink, shower and washing machine. If they install a bathroom instead of a cubicle, they do without a sink. This is not very convenient, but it saves space.

For small bathrooms, curved bathtubs are selected, preferably corner ones. It is better to install cantilever sinks and toilets.

Storage systems

Find storage space in an area of ​​30 square meters. m. not easy. They resort to various tricks.

1. Beds or sofas with large linen drawers and entire sections are a great way to store bulky items like pillows, blankets and linens.

2. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet is a necessity, not a luxury. And modern storage systems – pull-out baskets and shelves, elevators – make it equally easy to use both the lower and upper sections.

3. Ceiling shelves are a convenient and simple solution not only for the kitchen, but also for the bedroom.

4. Pantry-wardrobe – if you have one, it is more rational to convert it into a wardrobe and shoe closet.

5. A balcony or loggia can also serve as storage space. But then it’s worth equipping them with shelves, drawers, vertical racks with holders to keep things in order.

A little design trick: choose wall cabinets, living room cabinets with blank but shiny doors or with frosted glass glazing. This material reflects light, but does not allow you to see the contents of the cabinets.
